S500 Core - AMD Merlin Falcon (RX-421BD)

Overview

The S500 Core - AMD Merlin Falcon (RX421BD) is a certified Rhomb.io Core module based on the AMD Embedded R-Series System on a Chip (SoC). This thin and small board is easily pluggable on the Standard Rhomb.io Core sockets of the series S500 and has been designed to be the brain of a Rhomb.io modular system. It mainly accomplish two different roles: power supply management and computing.

The main characteristic of this core (as well as the other Rhomb.io Cores) is the full integration in such a small board of all the essential components to make the system work: CPU, GPU, RAM, boot memory and power management. Users that mount this core on a Rhomb.io Motherboard (or on a well designed custom board) will find that the only thing they should provide is a proper power source and a mass storage device with an installed OS.

The AMD APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) embedded in this core is a high performance, compact SoC with support for industrial temperatures and configurable TDP. It delivers astonishing graphics and HD multimedia processing performance – with true 4K decode and encode – via a sophisticated SoC architecture that integrates up to four of AMD’s latest high-performance “Excavator” x86 CPU cores with the latest AMD Radeon™ graphics and an I/O controller all on a single die.

Core specifications

The S500 Core - ADM Merlin Falcon (RX-421BD) brings a huge step forward in terms of performance, power and versatility. This core realeases the S500 Rhomb.io socket, with 100 more pins than the former S400 Rhomb.io socket. This aditional pins don't interfere with the S400 socket pins, so S500 socket is backwards compatible (a S400 Core fits perfectly in a S500 socket). In this pins, new voltage rails are added to provide this new generation of Cores with enough power to operate, and new high speed lines such as USB3.0 and Display Port are added to the Rhomb.io Standard.

This board integrates an AMD R7 SoC capable of deliver breakthrough graphics performance and power efficiency, and it is designed to provide ultra-immersive HD multimedia experiences and powerful parallel processing compute capabilities. Harnessing the processing power of AMD’s “Excavator” CPU core and a new graphics core based on the Radeon™ HD 10000 platform, the AMD R7 SoC breaks barriers in performance-per-watt compute efficiency in the x86 product category.

A Rhomb.io DDR socket is present on the Core, in which the user can plug a Rhomb.io DDR Memory module of the speed and capacity that better fit their design. The S500 Core - ADM Merlin Falcon (RX-421BD) supports DDR3 and DDR4 Memory modules up to 8GB and 2400 MHz. The small form factor of these modules and their plastic cases fit perfectly in the Core shape, making the two boards a perfectly integrated and armonic system.

Finally, a Richtek power solution, in addition to the Maxim PMIC, provides the necesary power to the SoC, the RAM and the Rhomb.io connectors. An Atmel uController guarantees that the power delivery is correctly done.

Warranty

  • Precaution against Electrostatic Discharge. When handling Rhomb.io products, ensure that the environment is protected against static electricity. Follow the next recommendations:
  1. The users should wear anti-static clothing and use earth band when manipulating the device.
  2. All objects that come in direct contact with devices should be made of materials that do not produce static electricity that would cause damage.
  3. Equipment and work table must be earthed.
  4. Ionizer is recommended to remove electron charge.
  • Contamination. Be sure to use semiconductor products in the environment that may not be exposed to dust or dirt adhesion.
  • Temperature/Humidity. Semiconductor devices are sensitive to environment temperature and humidity. High temperature or humidity may deteriorate semiconductor devices characteristics. Therefore avoid storage or usage in such conditions.
  • Mechanical Shock. Care should be exercised not to apply excessive mechanical shock or force on the connectors and semiconductors devices.
  • Chemical. Do not expose semiconductor device to chemical because reaction to chemical may cause deterioration of device characteristics.
  • Light Protection. In case of non-EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound) package, do not expose semiconductor IC to strong light. It may cause devices malfunction. Some special products which utilize the light or have security function are excepted from this specification.
  • Radioactive, Cosmic and X-ray. Semiconductor devices can be influenced by radioactive, cosmic ray or X-ray. Radioactive, cosmic and X-ray may cause soft error during device operation. Therefore semiconductor devices must be shielded under environment that may be exposed to radioactive, cosmic ray or X-ray.
  • EMS (Electromagnetic Susceptibility). Note that semiconductor devices characteristics may be affected by strong electromagnetic waves or magnetic field during operation.
